Bus Story - Part 1

What does it take to be a DNS BUS
Here is our DNS bus all clean and
beautiful, it is waiting for people who will fill
it's life with adventure, history and joy. Meet
bus VOLVO B5 manufactured on year 1975,
was born weighting 8 tons.
Rumour has it, it was living in Norway,
working for musicians and orchestra people.
Life went on and he moved to Poland … this
period of bus is not very well studied, there is
physically no evidence of it having any
activity. But then history can be picked up
from Lithuania, where our bus was working
as a suburb bus, and as it got wiser and older
it attracted and eye of wedding organizer.
They offered it to be special antiquary guest in big weddings, who could refuse an offer like this. So
for some years it was a great friend of many new weds, drove them were they were happy and
where all were celebrating and partying.
But one day global crisis wend down, many have lost their jobs and promised bonuses, that
were planned to be spend on hiring our bus, at the time it was not a cheep commodity. Crisis hit our
bus hard too, no one could afford him, no one was even getting married, sad times came over
Lithuania. Life turned hard, every penny was counted. But most sadly bus got depressed, no more
joy spirit was left in his cold metal heart, no will to fight for survival, no courage to end it all either.
So it wend down to parking place and parked it self back-wards, and stopped it's engine. Depression
was taking over, heart was freezing, breaks started to rust, moss started to grow on the body. Even
CIA has reported the bus is no longer a
threat to them and has publicised it's
picture on google maps.
So what was it waiting, what was it
dreaming or thinking all this time. Some
witness say it was totally closed to itself
and was mumbling something about having
no will of existing, scrap yard seemed like
a good idea for poor old bus. The end
seemed imminent.
Then one day a phone rang, and a
boy was asking about the bus, sounded
strange, because he mentioned Africa …
can that be right? But wait … he mentioned
it again. Must be a joker, in times like these
people like to make fun out of old buses.
But next day phone rang again and the boy
was again talking about Africa and when
can he come and meet the bus, maybe to talk … to talk about what?!
Unbelievable, but what ever … thought the bus and drowned to his rest. Some body came
and went again, friend driver had a guest for chit chat, nothing really unusual, so bus was not even
opening his eye to notice.
But when he was about to fall asleep to meet the full-moon of August it realised that there is
some movement around it's body. It tried to ignore it but someone was jumping in and out, someone
was trying to kick start its engine! It was neighbour masters of mechanics, what are they doing?
What do they want now? … What are they saying? They need to prepare it for a visit? Visit who?
http://maps.google.dk/maps?q=vilnius,
+salininkai&hl=da&ll=54.606904,25.263719&spn=
0.001212,0.003484&geocode=+&hnear=Salininkai,
+Vilnius,+Vilnius+amt,
+Litauen&t=h&safe=active&z=19
Suddenly all attention was electrified, or was it the battery charger? No it cant be true, who would
want to meet me? Thought the bus. But dirty neighbours were not really going away. They even
brought a bucket of diesel with them. Wow, visit or no visit, now the bus was interested. It has
forgotten what diesel tasted like, so it will not miss a chance like this. It barely noticed that there is
an unknown man, taking pictures, getting in and out, even looking under the bus. Bus was not
interested, it was keeping his eyes on that diesel that was smelling so nice. Some one was running
around yelling, taking more pictures, even videos.
– Brumm brum dha dha. - the bus cought as it was drinking fuel skills were rusted.
– Brumm, brumm – dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum. - it was a
pleasure that was long forgoten. Ahh how nice is the feeling to have all the pistons moving again.
– I wonder if the gears are in order? Thought the bus and pushed himself forward, -
ahh I still have it !
Bus was full of excitement and joy, it went around the parking place, making some smoke,
but hey who wouldn’t, after 2 years of sleep? It didn't pay attention to the people around, to their
conversations nor talks He missed the young man's conversation with the owner or the intensive
handshake they gave to each other. Only after bus has parked itself in the place, it noticed a big
smile on guys face, who at this moment was looking at the bus like he is trying to say something.
Long hair guy approached bus swiftly and started talking:
– Hello sir, My name is Romas and I need you to take a team of young teachers to
Africa. We need you to be our centre of the education, it that has history of having many
descriptions but never just one. You are DNS 2011 bus, and you will go with us to adventure of a
life time, so prepare yourself mentally and physically.
Romas explained the program that DNS has for the bus, it was out of this world! But he
sounded so firm that not for a second bus doubted his words.
– Who will drive me? - asked the Bus
– A driver - Romas answer.
– Driver who? You?
– No! I don’t have license. A DNS'er is taking drivers license as we speak, she is a nice
young lady, she will take you to Denmark, for your final preparation.
– What? I was never driven by a lady! But I never went to Africa too.
– Right then! I will leave you now. You. Shape yourself up, take a bath, get your
batteries and filters changed. I will try to keep you updated, but don't be surprised if I will show
with a short notice. OK?
– Okeiih...
And he left, just like he came. Bus was totally stunned, was it real, he looked at his ex owner
and he noticed him looking back with the pleasant smile. - It's true! The wires jumped, engine got
worm, lights sparked, life energy came with a wave! Depression … gone, will is back, joy for
adventure is taking over!
Next month was busy, two years made some damage, but off course Bus is 36 years old, that
is not without a trace. Fuel filters has to be changed, need new oil, new battery is here, a crack in a
window cant give a green light at inspection. But little by little documents were fine, and bus was
ready go.
Romas called, said he is coming, then he called and cancelled. Again Romas calls, he
announced that the new driver is ready and that he is coming to take the bus to Denmark … and
again he failed to full fill. The enthusiasm started to shrink, what if they changed their minds, what
if they don’t want it any more? They transferred all the money, but why would they not come, don’t
they need to work on design before they leave for Marocco, what is going on?! Winter came, and it
was almost obvious for bus that no travel will be soon, new year will be just as interesting as last
year.
Again Romas called, but this time he was on his way, with a driver and couple of students,
wow. On December 15th, its cold and a weather is bad, temperature will soon drop below zero. Is he
crazy, the bus is slow and it has not driven for so long, where will we sleep and who will pay for all
the diesel... it was so obvious that Bus was freaking out!
- Calm Down, said Romas, we know what we are into and we will not step down, nor
you will be lost or left behind, so pull yourself together man and lets get going. By the way, meet
CJ, she will drive you to Tvind.
(To be continued … )

DNS - An alternative kind of Education

We believe that education is the best way to change the world.
We believe in a free world, based on a fair and equal social system. We believe in people and (r)evolution. We don’t want perpetuate anymore this capitalist society and WE BELIEVE that „change is possible”, and the time to change is now!

The traditional education system is not educating people but formatting people, is giving us the capitalist tools to allow the continuation of this incorrect system.
DNS in cooperation with One World University is a program to educate and train teachers. Our sentence is „Let the World be our classroom and the people to be our teachers”.
This program involves volunteering, teaching and travelling and in the end offers you a Bachelor Degree in Pedagogical Science.

Our school is based in Denmark, but we are part of a worldwide DNS movement with Teacher Training Colleges also in India and Africa.
We live as a collective and you can find people from different nationalities here, with the same ideals. Our ex libris is a windmill, that was built as part of a movement, against nuclear power, in 1978. Our system is based in a Common-Economy and all the education is payed by ourselves as we have specific periods where we just work to save-up money. That is our way to make this education possible.

Our program:
1st year – Travel to North Africa, by our own BUS.
2nd year – Experience European reality plus „3 months to do what you find most appropriate to do”.
3rd year – Teaching Pratice in Europe.

OBS. Please take your time.

My 4 months in DNS
Hey team,

Today I feel like writing a bit about my 4 months experiences in our saving up period.
I thought of the idea partly because I do not know all of you too well, but I shall approach this
topic the further you read. The idea of sharing my experiences will give you an idea of what
my daily life consists of and the obstacles and challenges I have faced and am yet facing.

The Villas:

I began working in the Villas with (x) in the autum of September. My first reaction to my decition was that
I went two steps back to the square-root of zero. I imagined it boring, but, I was very wrong.
This is the kind of alternative job that allows to explore your capabilities and the students’ as well.
Your mentality changes towards the situation you are in and the people you work with too.

I must admit  that my first period with (x) was like being in a circle. I had to follow many restrictions
and previous routines, which I found a little bit provocative. Instead I told myself that I would create
my own restrictions and daily routines, which would be like a mix.
A sort of planner - and it has definetaly lightened and balanced the work more.
It allows one to take more resposibility and to accept the situation you are in.

The challenging tasks for me, while working in the Villas have been: cleanning constantly,
communication, teacher to student interaction and contact, ITP economy, program, Bus course,
distant from the team and more.

My first reaction to the topic communication, is that it is the priority in all cases.
If one piece of information slips the day might be ruined. I therefore see that whether you are working
with deaf or blind people, information will always be key. (x) is dependent on information, not only
body laguage but mainly verbal language. And I see she has been a very good student in grasping and
using the language in a bigger scale. If I compare her to the day I arrived, she has most certainly been
able to express herself wider. When we go for walks and we cross the small water drain, I ask her to
stop and listen to the sound of water. Then I ask her, where does it come from? And she responds that
it’s from the sea and offcourse I start to giggle, as it’s not. She is brilliant.

They say one song can change the world, and it is rather true. It can change (x)’s world. When she is sad
or angry - a small song makes her happy and she sings with 4 – 5 words. It is very unique for me to see
her use her verbal skills. She has certainly improved.

The teacher to student interaction has so far been impressive in my eyes. Once you keep a certain tone to
the different Villa students you create respect. And it is a difficult target. If I take for instance (z), where
I once took the decitions to not drive him into Ulfborg just because he was in need of chocolate, who in
many cases has no respect towards the female sex, and made him very furious which then caused troubles.

He threw nasty words at me. Then (y) the teacher handled the situation as I was physically weak.
As he calmed down after a serious matter with (y), he came over and apologized, where I was mean to
say that I cannot accept. Then I explainned why and it provoked a sparkle in his him.
Allowing him to realize that the female teachers are here to help him and not only serve him.

When working with (x), the major responsibility is also cleanning and hygiene.
Without it, nothing operates in the Villa world. Nevertheless, it is not only in the Villa world, it is everywhere.
I even have it as a natural instinct, which can annoy me when my co-teachers so not see what is dirty.
I have had twice serious discussions with the teachers in Villas about cleaning standards and how to clean
the shelves and floors. It is embarrassing to see how bad a few are at it. It is the truth. I definetaly
understand why it is important to keep the different standards in the different areas. There is no discussion.

My toughest period:

The toughest period for me has been when I had the combination of working in the Villas with (x) and (o)
thus taking the 6 weeks bus course in Holstebro everyday. It was a stressful and difficult time.
I really felt I was under pressure. I exceeded my limits in a provocative way, as I never imagined myself in a bus situation. At least not in a young age.
To me it was definetaly like climbing a mountain without gear nor equipment.
But in some fenomenal way it ended well. I have learnt the ultimate I must admit. Life is so abstract.

The responsibility you get when you drive such a bus, is inexplicable. We are talking about other
peoples lives.

When I drove the EU qualification 6 hour tour  on the 15/12 – 2011, I was then shocked on the amount
of fuel such a bus needs. My bus teacher tanked the bus I drove with around 400 litres or more for
5000 Dkk. I was very shocked. The thought of the amount oil companies gain per hour, day, month and
year stroked me twice. I thought of the amount we would use under our 4 month Africa tour.
It will be monstrous.

My closing:

As part of my closing I would like to mention and make you once again realize the importance of the
saving up period in DNS. I mean we have thrown ourselves into strange jobs/contracts that we might
never have done in the ordinary lifestyle. We are not just the pioneer team but the resilient amateur team.
The saving up period in my perspective does not just bring tears, sorrow, sweat, turbulance, anger,
hope, happiness, joy or laughter but it also builds and tears apart. It shall allow us to explore, learn and
have more potential. I relate it to one of Piccasso’s quotes which states that
”every act of creation is first an act of destruction”. Think about it

I have to say that I am looking forwards to preparing our Lithuanian bus with all of you form the start
of february - and I am mostly lingering with the excitement to share 4 breathtaking months experiencing
all sorts of things with all of you through the hot Saharan desert.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Norway Ideas

hi all

with the moss job over and the tulip job start and stopping, can we guess the predicted in come agin to see how much we are short?

i have been asked by my work to stay longer this can create an extra 25000nok a month - expencives - taking my bus licence in Norway 31439nok / £ 3,491.18 / 30,388.56Dkk

My plan:

income 2 months 50000nok
expencive  7000nokLicence 31439nok

Total 38439nok
My plan is i finish adding to common eceonmy 1st Feb everything else plays for my licence and living expencives while in Oslo this would include flights to england to see my family before Africa. then once i have finished my test i give every else left to common economy. this way i secure my job for the furture. i can earn X3 in Oslo then what i get in UK. if you havent noticed already i enjoy working and pushing my self to my working limits. i have a apartment sorted out all ready and the job i just need to book the lessons (with a couple of little problems). i wouldnt be apart of any of the prep of the bus or the travel but i will have my licence and a job for the next 3 years in DNS.

I still havent made my mind up fully yet and would really like to know what you think. i know i have a lot of ideas and some of them seem crazy and maybe this is another one of them. but i have idea which means im alive lol

i still want this prep time and team to start 1st feb so we would be ready to go to Africa in april 1st,  but i also dont want to leave my job when we still need cash.

From Norway - 01.12.2011

HI

everyone who is interested in the Palestinien issues in Oslo, here is some news for you. Yesterday, the youngest Mohamed has been arresten and brought to Trodom, the deportation prison. He has been just picked up on the street. Therefore there was a demonstration at the Foreign Policy building. Beginning as a peacefull demonstration, followed by a few six pack...means big police cars, ready to arrest people...it was hard to controll the anger. Lucky for us, we managed and went back to the camp after we realized, that this will only leads to more arrestments.
Most of the guyes stayed up all night. Me and Giedre tried to sleep a little bit, as we were planning to get up at four to go to the airport. About two the police came with some ridiculous accussations...more than to meter hight guyes, acting very cool, talking to a small woman from the Antiracist centre...ehm...

We organized ourselves quickly, as to react to this sithuation has been prepared since a long time, the lawyer has been contacted immediately. Few printed flyers and we decided not to go the Deportation prison, but to solve true the lawyer. After what we saw at the Foreign Policy building, we just wanted to avoid clashes with the police.
About ten people, all Europeen citizens, ready to be arrested, off to the airport to try to catch up Mohamed and give out flyers to the passangers and pilots...etc. Nothing much happend at the airport, appart from that about 1000 people know about Mohameds case and the Camp issue in Oslo...

Now Mohamed is brought back to Oslo for court, which starts at one o'clock. So we all be there to support him. Feel good and gives us hope. Nevertheless...still I am little bit scared, that all those promises were just words...

There is a speculation about a current deal between Norway and Israel, which is the real cause for the change in this issue. But no one seems to know, what that exactly is.

Have a nice weekend
Marketa and Giedre

From Norway - 29.11.2011

So today i only managed to place 1 tin!! Rosa gave me a bus pass that goes west of oslo which means that i am the only one who is able to go this far. and yet, every new place i go to, even outside of Oslo, has already been done by someone else!! on the file, the place just says "oslo" and a street name which means unless i try to find every street on the map and cross it off, (which will take forever) i have no clue where has been done untill i waste my time getting there. Today steve and i collected the tins that were placed incorrectly, which at least gave me something to do after discovering the places i went to had been done again!! i have even been to places outside of my pass allowence (which i paid an extra 20NOK to do) and there were still tins there!! so now i have 2 days in which to place tins, and no idea where to go! i have one more tin to collect tomorrow but then what?! i cant findraise alone - i have tried. i am able to talk t people when they have stopped, but i cant get them to stop! marina used to stop them, and i would talk. it worked well but now i am lost. so now im feelin really shitty as i have only made 100nok today and now i have 2 days in whoch i dont expect to really earn anything! it is also frustrating as i could have been working in the pub in england as soon as i finished the bus licence which would mean my earning would have been constent. i know we didnt know this moss thing would go bad, meaning i wasnt going to lithuania, but it's just another thing adding to the frustration and bringing me down. i hate being out of work, or being bad at a job i have. but i am at a dead end. Romas has asked me if i will go to the tulip farm after the meeting (which i guess we will discuss during the meeting), which is great, but what do i do for the next 2 days?

hope you are all good. glad to hear the girls are getting on well at the tulip thingy and that results are up.
see you all soon.

18.11.2011 - From Tvind

Dear All

Thanks for your different updates

Marina – I have finally got a bank account in Norway so you can use that one. I got the letter today but it is so fancy that I do not completely understand what is the account number, but I will call the bank about it Monday.
It is with Netbanking meaning I can transfer to the teams master card, pay the house rent from it etc.

The moss group does not have internet but I got their results via phone.
I know they had a very good day yesterday and today the forest was not so good.
The customer from Holland who complained a lot some days ago, called the company today and said that the moss now is VERY good – so Christian – the boss nr 2 brought cake and also phoned me and told that we do a good work now. He also told that soon they have delivered all the trucks of moss they promised to the customer, and that Christian has agreed with Claus – boss nr 1, that he shall not sell the moss anymore before it is picked. So hopefully all the moss chaos will stop. I also asked him for how long he thinks the work will be, and he says that they can sell, so we can pick until frost will hinder it.
Romas is now employed pr hour to drive all the pallets. I think that is good, since that can make the work easier for everyone.
We are picking together with Kerli from DNS 2012 and 2 from Lindersvold. Today 3 more from Lindersvold should have come and Sunday 4 from Holsted, but they do not come since they now have job in a green house, so we miss very much people since Natalya is at study weekend and Zane is ill.
Suddenly everybody has job here. Holsted called me today and asked if we could come to the green house too, since more was needed, but we obviously cannot since we still have to deliver the moss.

Tvind is fine but empty since the villas are in St Vincent and PTG in Moss.

But today DNS 2010 started study weekend. They seems very fine and create life.

Next Wednesday a girl comes for prep weekend for DNS 2011 and she has around 5000 euro so if she enroll she will not harm the economy.
And Thursday another girl will come, but she only has 700 euro, so she will come for DNS 12 most likely, but she will start saving up now if she enrol, and if she can find a solution she wants DS 2011.

But none of them has been here before, so let us see

Many greetings to all
 Anne Hoejholt

Earlier I wrote about a Christmas job. From the moss group they have told that Buza, Eszter, Peter and Lauritta want the work so far.

18.11.2011 - From Germany

Hi,

Today we had a long day. We collected more than 1 ton of clothes and we had a small problem with the Van (the GPS was not charging because of some electrical problems) and we had to go in service to fix it. Now we are about to prepare some dinner :)...and we feel tired (especially Laura who is a littler bit cold).

Greetings,

Munster girls
